The Process of Crying

Crying, a natural phenomenon

Crying is a very common and sort of mysterious phenomenon for the race of human being. Most people cry, both willingly or unwillingly. It is a process which has been kind of strange according to mechanical and scientific definitions if discussed with respect to emotions and feelings.

According to the knowledge of biology, crying is defined as the removal of water, salt and hormones through the ocular structures without any kind of pain and itching. In the medical terms it is defined as to lacrimate because crying includes the removal of salts through the lacrimatory system. There is a neuronal connection present in between the lacrimal system and the part of brain related to emotions. When the impulse is sent through the brain, the lacrimal system starts to shed tears.

According to most people, it takes place due to emotional action and unique and desperate feeling of the human beings. Some scientist think that weeping can only be due to the emotional actions while others oppose it.

Many people believe that crying is a process performed only by human beings. Some think that humans cry only due to emotions; but Charles Darwin proved both things wrong. He described in his book about animals. He told about the Indian elephants in the London zoo that were charged by their keeper. The keeper told that the big animals often shed tears due to the pain.

According to some researchers, crying is due to helplessness of humans in any matter. It can be helplessness due to overflowing happiness, pain or sorrow.

Why do we feel better after crying?

Crying is also defined as a process to release grief and sorrow. Many believers call it a wonder medicine for releasing stress without any pain and loss. It is observed by almost everyone that after the doze of crying, the tension and stress is abated to a surprising extent.

According to the scientific terms and lab reports, it is explained that the tears contain a large amount of hormones and proteins. Many hormones that control the rate of tension and stress in human brain are removed through the ocular structure as a part of tears. William H. Frey II told in one of his reports that the hormone responsible for stress in human body is of associa adrenocorticotropic hormone. During the process of crying, a large amount of this hormone is removed in the form of tears. This causes the release of sorrow and depression. Tears also include a large amount of proteins related with the stress reactions and in this process; the negative aspects of anger and pain are removed.

The process of crying was also studied in several laboratories under special conditions. It was commonly observed that during the process, several changes occur in the body such as increased heart rate, sweating and slow breathing. During anger and grief, the body state rises up and the body is tensed. The natural phenomenon of crying assists the nervous system to calm down and normalize the blood pressure by slow breathing and heart rate.

According to the report of Dr. Oren Hassan serving as psychologist in the zoology department at Tel Aviv University, the process of crying shows vulnerability to the other person or attacker, hence it is better to avoid it. Nevertheless it is commonly very useful to cry bitterly and let the tears flow when one is alone in his room.
